Aim

In today's globalized world, where social, cultural, political and economic confrontations are on the rise, there is growing questioning and anticipation of anthropology's role in providing solutions to these conflicts. For anthropology to offer appropriate answers to these problems, it is necessary for anthropologists all over the world and, in particular, anthropological associations in different parts of the world to cooperate and collaborate. Activities of the WCAA—World Council of Anthropological Associations—are conducted precisely for this purpose. Almost all major anthropological associations in the world have joined this Council. The aim of WCAA OSAKA 2008 is to bring together representatives of each of these member associations for intensive discussion to share awareness of the issues that anthropology confronts, deepen understanding about different and plural anthropologies studied and practiced in different parts of the world, which we call "world anthropologies". Based on such understandings, it aims to send out a message from to advance international cooperation within anthropology and anthropology for international cooperation. We will begin our discussion in the form of preliminary closed meetings over a period of two days. On the afternoon of the second day, we will summarize the discussions of the preliminary meetings and hold a workshop entitled "Conversations with Anthropology in Japan" in order to discuss cooperation among anthropological associations in general, and between the WCAA and Japanese anthropology. The workshop will invite leading Japanese researchers, the president and former president of the Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology (JASCA), the chair and past chairs of the Committee for International Relations of JASCA, and Director-General and scholars of the National Museum of Ethnology. The results of the preliminary meetings and workshop will be discussed at an international symposium opened to the public, entitled "Conflict, Cooperation, and Anthropologies' Role in the World". The results of the discussion over the three days will be disseminated internationally through the WCAA, particularly in the form of multi-lingual proceedings, providing a basis for constructing relationships of mutual cooperation among anthropological associations all over the world.

Conference participants

Five members of the Executive Secretariat of the WCAA, and presidents or representatives of member associations of the WCAA will participate in the conference. Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research which supports anthropology internationally is one of the funding organizations of this conference, and the President of the Foundation will attend the conference.
